The Countdown Begins

Yesterday Gretch and I signed away another year of our lives. On August 21, 2010, Gretch and I will be moving from our current (and first, as a married couple) abode and establishing a new residence across town at 2509-A Leeper Dr.

Our new home will be just four miles away from where we currently live. It places us that much further away from my parents' house (not a significant amount when they already live about 90 miles away), but it will make us considerably closer to Gretch's parents (about a mile away instead of four).

It is probably a little bit smaller than our current home, seeing as it is only one floor and there is no basement, but we will have about 1150 sq ft, give or take. We will have an attached garage, though, which means no more pesky neighbours parking in our spaces.

Unfortunately, the move will cause us to change wards, but we'll still see our friends from Mahomet and, hopefully, we'll hear from them from time to time. But we felt it was important to downsize a bit so as to be able to get ahead in our finances. Yeah, we're trying to be all responsible and grown-up these days. Please don't misinterpret this - we are not swimming in a life of reckless abandon or anything like that. We just don't like paying too much for a place to live.

Anyway, we have something close to 182 days now to pack our worldly possessions, making the proper preparations, notify all the right people, and move across town. Five to six months seems like such a long way away, but we also have a couple of weddings, a multitude of baby showers (at least for Gretch), at least one week-long teen leadership camp, and who knows what else. So it is going to be a busy, busy, busy six months.

Incidentally, the other side of the duplex is also available for rent, so if anyone in the Chambana area is looking for a new home and wants some hip neighbours to share a wall, check it out!

So... um, so much for writing a new blog post once a week. I don't even remember how long it took for me to stop. I keep meaning to update, but then life happens and I don't get around to it. I probably have too many blogs that I try to keep up with in the first place. I update my teaching blog every day there is school. I update the million minutes blog a few times each month, and I thoroughly neglect the GreedCycle blog that Gretch and I started over a year ago. Anyway, Gretch and I have had a lot going on, but since we really don't  want our blog to be just medical updates, I haven't been writing about them. Is Civil Discourse Too Much To Ask For?

As I am pretty certain everyone reading this blog knows, I am an active participant on several different blogs, many of them related to religion, politics, education, and social issues. In a recent blog post at By Common Consent, a Mormon blog, about immigration, a nugget was posted by a (to the best of my knowledge) drive-by commenter, ranting and raving about "illegals" ruining our nation. Here is the verbatim post: Do illegals pay social security? Millions of dollars are sent back to Mexico to their families. And their are jobs besides farm jobs that that citizens haven’t done because wages have been depressed by importing them at a cheaper rate. A condition of higher unemployment means that any race, Irish etal takes opportunities from those who first deserve them. Eventually, the citizen would take any job to survive if they hadn’t already been taken by then. If no citizen needed that job, then I wouldn’t care about that aspect of it. And This Is Life Eternal

Many of you know that I am a professional educator. I work in the Freeport School District as the Curriculum Coordinator for 21st Century Teaching and Learning. Whenever I have the opportunity to share this with others upon meeting them for the first time, one of the first questions I get is, “Is that your real hair?” Apparently, there are things people care about more than know what it means to coordinate the teaching and learning efforts of an entire century. (The answer, by the way, is yes, this is my real hair; no, I don’t dye it; yes, it really is this curly; and no, you cannot touch it to see if it is actually a wig.)  Once I am able to get the discussion about my amazing naturally curly hair out of the way, we get back to the question of what it is I actually do.
